Quick Answer

The AprilAire E070 is worth considering when a professionally planned installation calls for its higher published capacity, ducting arrangements and an installer who will support the system. The ALORAIR Sentinel HD55S belongs on the shortlist when its capacity fits the moisture load and its complete installed quote leaves a meaningful saving.

Neither is the right purchase simply because its product title contains the biggest pint number. The HD55S's “120-pint” headline and the E070's “70-pint” rating describe different test conditions.

Start with the space, temperature and drain. Then compare complete quotes. The calculator on this page lets you compare purchase, installation and ongoing costs without assuming that one machine automatically lasts longer or uses less electricity.

Specifications are manufacturer-published, not our test results. The E070 dimensional figure excludes adjustable feet, filter doors and duct collars; neither row represents the total space needed for installation and servicing. [1][2][3]

Compare 70 with 55—not with 120

At the same published 80°F / 60% relative humidity condition, the comparison is 70 versus 55 US pints per day. ALORAIR's larger 120-pint figure is a saturation rating. It does not establish that the HD55S removes more water than the E070 under equivalent conditions. [1][2]

Other databases and labels can show lower figures under different test procedures. For example, the ENERGY STAR record checked for Sentinel HD55S lists 36.33 pints/day and identifies particular model/UPC information. That record should not be mixed into an 80°F comparison or applied to an unidentified older unit. [4]

The practical lesson is simple: compare the test conditions and the exact machine, then decide whether that capacity is sufficient for your home.

A larger rated number is useful only if the installation needs it. It cannot tell you how much water enters through an exposed ground surface, how much outdoor air leaks into the space or whether dry air can reach a separated room. Avoid choosing a dehumidifier from floor area alone.

Canadian cold spaces: check temperature before price

A crawl space that is warm and humid in August can behave very differently in November.

AprilAire's E070 documentation specifies dehumidification with inlet air from 10°C to 40°C, with a minimum dew point of about 4.4°C. Its owner's manual describes an out-of-range condition when the inlet air or dew point falls outside the permitted range. [1][5]

ALORAIR publishes a lower operating-temperature minimum for the HD55S and automatic defrost. That makes it a candidate to investigate for a cooler installation; it does not promise full rated water removal near freezing. [2]

If your crawl space regularly drops below the E070's permitted conditions, its higher warm-test capacity does not resolve that mismatch. Conversely, “operates down to 1°C” is not enough to size the HD55S for a difficult cold space.

Record the actual temperature and humidity where the unit will draw air, and have the proposed model checked against those conditions. Include the condensate route: an appliance's defrost feature does not prevent a drain line outside the heated envelope from freezing.

For seasonal context, see our Canadian basement humidity guide.

Both need a proper drain

Neither of the standard models compared here should be purchased on the assumption that it includes a built-in condensate pump.

A gravity installation needs a suitable lower drain and a route with the required fall. Where water has to travel uphill, include a compatible external condensate pump and its installation in the quote. The E070 manufacturer documents list an optional pump; it is an additional component, not a feature to assume is inside the unit. [1][2]

This can change the apparent bargain. Two equipment prices are not comparable if one installation quote includes the pump, controls and drainage work while the other excludes them.

Before ordering, settle:

  • Where collected water will discharge.
  • Whether the whole route can drain by gravity.
  • What happens if a hose blocks or an external pump fails.
  • How the drain can be inspected and maintained.

Our pump vs gravity-drain guide covers that decision in more detail.

Ducting and access can matter more than the front-panel features

The E070's manufacturer-listed package includes 8-inch inlet and outlet collars, a drain tube and a washable MERV-8 filter. ALORAIR lists optional ducting and remote-control accessories for the standard HD55S. Confirm the exact parts included in the offer you choose. [3][6]

A longer cabinet is not automatically harder to install: the usable route through the hatch and the direction of the duct connections matter. Equally, a compact unit is not a good fit if you cannot remove its filter or reach the drain once it is in place.

Measure the access opening, the path to the installation point and the space for servicing. Ask the installer how air will move through any divided sections of the crawl space. Do not buy ducting purely to match a product photo.

“Remote control” also does not necessarily mean Wi-Fi or away-from-home notifications. Keep the standard models in this comparison separate from the similarly named connected versions.

What we verified about buying in Canada

E070: Impressive Climate Control displayed the exact E070 at CA$1,878 when checked on November 4, 2026. Shipping was calculated at checkout. We did not verify a delivery date to a particular postal code or the final installed price. [7]

Amazon.ca: We verified matching listings for E070, ASIN B094PR3HQ1, and HD55S White, ASIN B097JH2HDH. We did not establish dependable current Amazon pricing, seller eligibility or postal-code delivery for either. A matching listing is not an in-stock guarantee. [8][9]

HD55S variants: Canadian retailer Rise also listed an HD55S Gold version. That is a separate offer to investigate, not a price we should attach to the White Amazon listing. Confirm the exact variant, supplied manual, accessories and warranty arrangements before comparing offers. [10]

For both brands, check delivery, return freight, authorized-seller status and who handles Canadian service. Those answers can matter more than a small difference between headline prices.

Does AprilAire's premium buy a longer life?

We could not verify comparative failure rates or expected service life for these two models. A longer warranty headline is also not the same as more complete coverage.

AprilAire publishes a five-year warranty for the E070. The owner-manual version reviewed includes component coverage and limitations on labour and installation; ask for the terms applicable to the unit and purchase channel in your quote. [1][5]

ALORAIR's current policy describes six-year limited coverage for qualifying dehumidifier purchases, with fuller coverage in the first two years and refrigeration-system parts coverage in years three through six. Later-period transportation and labour are excluded in that policy. Eligibility depends on the purchase channel and applicable terms. [11]

Get the Canadian service path in writing: who diagnoses a failure, where the unit goes and who pays removal, shipping and reinstallation. Neither the guide nor the calculator assigns a financial value to unverified future reliability.

Calculator: compare the ownership budget

The interactive planner on this page takes each complete equipment and installation quote, an electricity-use scenario and a maintenance allowance. Method: upfront = equipment + installation + extras + other one-time costs; annual energy cost = daily kWh × operating days × electricity rate; modeled cost = upfront + years × (annual energy cost + annual maintenance).

The example below deliberately gives both options the same electricity use. That is a neutral starting assumption, not a claim that their efficiency or runtime is equal.

Annual maintenance allowanceCA$50CA$50

These are hypothetical budget inputs, not retailer quotes, measured consumption or Canadian averages. They exclude tax, delivery, repairs and replacement unless you add those amounts to the relevant inputs.

With those assumptions:

  • Upfront budgets are CA$2,650 and CA$1,350.
  • Each energy scenario costs CA$129.60 per year.
  • Five-year modeled totals, including the maintenance allowances, are CA$3,548 and CA$2,248.
  • The difference is CA$1,300, entirely from the assumed upfront costs.

Change the inputs to match the actual offers. Five years is simply the comparison period; it is not a predicted lifespan or a warranty promise.

If one machine runs less or consumes less power in your home, its electricity cost can differ. You cannot determine that by multiplying its maximum current rating by voltage or assuming the two machines run identical hours.

When the E070 is worth considering

Choose the AprilAire E070 when the assessed moisture load supports its higher capacity, the temperature conditions fit, and the proposed installation provides a useful ducting and service arrangement.

The strongest case is a complete, supported solution: the contractor explains why that model is sized correctly, how it drains and how you will obtain service. The higher price alone is not evidence of better durability.

When the HD55S is the better fit

Choose the standard ALORAIR Sentinel HD55S when its capacity and operating limits suit the space, gravity drainage or an external pump is properly planned, and the complete quote leaves a saving you value.

Confirm that the listing is the HD55S White if you want the exact Amazon model used here. Do not assume an HD55, HD55P, Gold or Wi-Fi listing has the same package or configuration.

If the space has standing water or recurring seepage, investigate and correct the water source first. If neither model's layout or drainage fits, return to our crawl-space dehumidifier roundup for other configurations. An accessible, conditioned basement may also be served by a suitable portable basement dehumidifier. More guides: Basement & Moisture Control Hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the HD55S a 55-pint or 120-pint machine?
Both figures appear in its marketing, but at different conditions. Use the 55-pint rating at 80°F / 60% RH when comparing it with the E070's 70-pint figure at that condition. [1][2]

Does either standard model include a pump?
The comparison is between gravity-drain configurations. Include a compatible external condensate pump if the installation needs water lifted to a higher drain. Confirm any retailer bundle separately. [1][2]

Can I choose from the advertised square footage?
Use it as a starting point, not a sizing result. Moisture entry, air leakage, temperature, connected spaces and drainage must also fit the installation.

Can the calculator tell me which will last longer?
No. It totals the costs and usage assumptions you enter. It does not predict breakdowns, lifetime, moisture removal or whether a unit is correctly sized.
