At 2 metres in length and up to 150 kilograms in weight, the black bear is a powerful animal. The good news is that they are, by nature, reclusive and try to avoid contact with humans. Countering that is the fact that male bears may cover a territory as broad as 140 square kilometres in search of food (and female bears), and that Algonquin Park has estimated that there is one bear for every 3-4 square kilometres. So, encountering a black bear in Muskoka is not an uncommon event. In our painstaking research on black bears we learned that they are omnivores, which means they will eat anything. The detailed list includes plants, berries, seeds, and insects while, encouragingly, excluding humans.
